Once a year
Trimming once a year will keep most hedges looking tidy and prevent them getting bigger than desired.
Twice a year
Some species can be cut twice a year. This is rarely essential but can create a neater hedge. If you are unsure how often, or when you should cut your hedge, please call us for free advice.
Reductions
Hedges are sometimes left to get out of control, then a reduction is needed. This is undertaken by cutting off the top of the hedge to a manageable height. Consideration must be given to the amount of the reduction as very severe work may damage the hedge.

Dead wooding
Some species have a lot of dead wood (e.g. oaks). In gardens and public places this can be dangerous if it falls. Most trees in bad health will have deadwood. It is always best to cut dead wood out for safety reasons and for the proper care of the tree.

Reduction
This process makes a tree smaller. Reductions can be to the height of a tree, the side braches or all over. This process can often help if trees are being blown excessively in wind.
Crown raising / lifting
This process involves removing the lowest branches from a tree known as the crown. This can often give gardens more light and openness.
Thinning
Thinning the crown of the tree lets more light through without losing the shadow entirely and can also help in regards to wind resistance of the tree.
